Steriod boon or bane ?

Steroids, also known as corticosteroids, have been a topic of much discussion and research, especially in the context of COVID-19.

Boon:

  • Immunomodulation: Corticosteroids serve an immunomodulatory function by suppressing excessive immune responses. They are particularly useful in managing the cytokine storm (an intense inflammatory response) seen in severe COVID-19 cases.
  • Preventing Multi-organ Failure: By dampening inflammation, corticosteroids can help prevent multi-organ failure and death in critically ill patients.
  • Effective Against SARS-CoV-2: Clinical trials and observational studies have shown that Corticosteroids like Hydrocortisone, Dexamethasone, Prednisolone, and Methylprednisolone are effective against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. They use both genomic and non-genomic effects to reduce inflammation in tissues and circulation.
  • Inhaled Budesonide: Inhaled budesonide (a synthetic corticosteroid) has been found to increase time to recovery and potentially reduce hospitalizations or fatalities in COVID-19 patients.
  • Muscle Growth: Anabolic steroids, when used responsibly and under medical supervision, can aid in muscle growth and repair. They are sometimes prescribed to patients recovering from surgery or illness to help rebuild muscle mass.
  • Performance Enhancement: In certain contexts, such as professional sports or competitive bodybuilding, steroids can enhance physical performance, leading to increased strength and endurance.
  • Bane:

    • Side Effects: Like any medication, corticosteroids have side effects. Prolonged use can lead to issues such as weight gain, osteoporosis, diabetes, and increased susceptibility to infections.
    • Risk-Benefit Balance: The decision to use corticosteroids must weigh the potential benefits against the risks. In some cases, the benefits may outweigh the risks, especially in severe COVID-19 cases.
    • Addiction: Some individuals may become psychologically dependent on steroids, leading to addiction and the potential for withdrawal symptoms when use is discontinued.

In summary, corticosteroids can be a boon when used judiciously in severe COVID-19 cases, but their long-term use requires careful consideration. Always consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
