Appendicitis

Overview

It usually occurs due to blockage or infection. Ruptured appendix can lead to peritonitis, a life-threatening condition.

Causes

  • Blockage by stool, lymph tissue
  • Infection or injury
  • Tumors (rare)

Symptoms

  • Sudden right lower abdominal pain
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fever
  • Rebound tenderness

Treatment: Modern Medicine

  • Diagnosis: Clinical exam, ultrasound, CT scan
  • Treatment:
    • Surgery (appendectomy – laparoscopic or open)
    • Antibiotics (pre and post-surgery)

Treatment: Traditional Medicine

  • Ayurveda: Not a focus due to acute emergency nature, but herbs like Eranda, Triphala for bowel cleansing in early inflammation
  • Siddha/Unani: Herbal laxatives and warm compresses in mild cases
  • Nutraceuticals: Post-surgery – zinc, probiotics, turmeric for healing

Prevention

  • High-fiber diet to prevent stool blockage
