Overview
Mild deviation is common and asymptomatic. Severe DNS may require surgical correction (septoplasty) if it leads to chronic symptoms.
Causes
- Congenital deformity
- Trauma (sports, accidents)
- Poor post-surgical healing
- Uneven growth during puberty
Symptoms
- Nasal congestion (one side)
- Recurrent sinusitis or infections
- Snoring, mouth breathing
- Nosebleeds
- Headache or facial pressure
Treatment: Modern Medicine
- Diagnosis: Nasal endoscopy, CT scan
- Treatment:
- Decongestants, antihistamines (for symptom relief)
- Nasal steroid sprays
- Septoplasty: Surgery to straighten the septum
Treatment: Traditional Medicine
- Ayurveda: Nasya (nasal drops), Triphala ghrita
- Siddha: Herbal nasal drops and fomentation
- Unani: Steam therapy with Arq Gulab, Satt-e-Gond
- TCM: Acupressure around nasal and lung meridians
- Homeopathy: Kali bichromicum, Lemna minor
- Nutraceuticals: Anti-inflammatory herbs, Vitamin C
Caution
- DNS may worsen snoring or obstructive sleep apnea
- Surgery is elective but beneficial in chronic sufferers
Prevention
- Prevent facial injury (helmets, sports gear)
- Early treatment of childhood nasal injuries
