Retinal Detachment

Overview

Can be caused by trauma, high myopia, or aging. Prompt surgery can restore or preserve vision, but delay can result in permanent blindness.

Causes

  • Eye trauma
  • High myopia
  • Aging (posterior vitreous detachment)
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Family history

Symptoms

  • Sudden floaters or flashes of light
  • A curtain or shadow over vision
  • Sudden blurry or lost vision
  • No pain (usually)

Treatment: Modern Medicine

  • Diagnosis: Fundus exam, OCT, B-scan ultrasonography
  • Treatment:
    • Laser photocoagulation (small tears)
    • Vitrectomy or scleral buckle surgery
    • Pneumatic retinopexy (air bubble treatment)

Treatment: Traditional Medicine

  • Ayurveda: Supportive – Triphala, Amalaki for eye nourishment
  • Siddha/Unani/TCM: Not suitable for acute repair; supportive care post-surgery
  • Homeopathy: Phosphorus, Gelsemium (adjunct only)
  • Nutraceuticals: Vitamin A, C, E, Zinc, Lutein, Zeaxanthin, Omega-3

Caution

  • Sudden vision changes require immediate eye care
  • Delay in treatment may cause irreversible blindness

Prevention

  • Regular eye check-up (especially for myopia/diabetics)
  • Wear protective glasses during sports/work
  • Control diabetes and hypertension
