Overview
Can be caused by trauma, high myopia, or aging. Prompt surgery can restore or preserve vision, but delay can result in permanent blindness.
Causes
- Eye trauma
- High myopia
- Aging (posterior vitreous detachment)
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Family history
Symptoms
- Sudden floaters or flashes of light
- A curtain or shadow over vision
- Sudden blurry or lost vision
- No pain (usually)
Treatment: Modern Medicine
- Diagnosis: Fundus exam, OCT, B-scan ultrasonography
- Treatment:
- Laser photocoagulation (small tears)
- Vitrectomy or scleral buckle surgery
- Pneumatic retinopexy (air bubble treatment)
Treatment: Traditional Medicine
- Ayurveda: Supportive – Triphala, Amalaki for eye nourishment
- Siddha/Unani/TCM: Not suitable for acute repair; supportive care post-surgery
- Homeopathy: Phosphorus, Gelsemium (adjunct only)
- Nutraceuticals: Vitamin A, C, E, Zinc, Lutein, Zeaxanthin, Omega-3
Caution
- Sudden vision changes require immediate eye care
- Delay in treatment may cause irreversible blindness
Prevention
- Regular eye check-up (especially for myopia/diabetics)
- Wear protective glasses during sports/work
- Control diabetes and hypertension
