BRAIN TUMOR

Overview

Brain tumors can originate in the brain (primary) or spread from other parts of the body (secondary or metastatic). They can compress brain tissues and nerves, causing symptoms like headaches, seizures, and vision issues. Common types include gliomas, meningiomas, pituitary tumors, and astrocytomas.

Causes

  • Genetic mutations or inherited syndromes (e.g., Li-Fraumeni, Neurofibromatosis)
  • Exposure to ionizing radiation
  • Family history of brain tumors
  • Weakened immune system (e.g., HIV/AIDS or immunosuppressive therapy)
  • Rarely, environmental toxins

Symptoms

  • Persistent or worsening headaches
  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Vision, speech, or hearing problems
  • Nausea or vomiting (especially in the morning)
  • Balance issues or clumsiness
  • Personality or memory changes
  • Numbness or weakness in limbs

Treatment: Modern Medicine

·         Radiation Therapy: Destroys tumor cells or shrinks tumors

·         Chemotherapy: Kills or stops the growth of cancer cells

·         Targeted Therapy: Drugs that target specific tumor cells

·         Steroids: Reduce brain swelling

·         Anticonvulsants: Control seizures
