Overview
Two types:
- Irritant Contact Dermatitis (ICD) – from harsh chemicals
- Allergic Contact Dermatitis (ACD) – immune response (e.g., to nickel, latex)
Causes
- Soaps, detergents, acids
- Nickel, perfumes, rubber, hair dye
- Plants like poison ivy
- Topical antibiotics (e.g., neomycin)
Symptoms
- Red, itchy rash
- Blisters or peeling
- Burning or stinging
- Dry, cracked skin
- Pattern follows exposure area
Treatment: Modern Medicine
- Diagnosis: Clinical pattern, patch testing (for allergies)
- Treatment:
- Avoid trigger substance
- Topical steroids (e.g., hydrocortisone)
- Antihistamines for itching
- Barrier creams for protection
Treatment: Traditional Medicine
- Ayurveda: Eladi taila, Nimba, Manjistha lepa
- Siddha: Mathan thylam, decoctions with Siruthenilai
- Unani: Arq-e-Gulab, cooling compresses, blood purifiers
- TCM: Huang Qin, Bai Xian Pi, anti-allergy herbs
- Homeopathy: Graphites, Sulphur, Natrum mur
- Nutraceuticals: Omega-3, Zinc, Vitamin E, Quercetin
Caution
- Repeated exposure can cause chronic eczema
- Avoid self-use of strong steroid creams
Prevention
- Identify and avoid triggers
- Use gloves or barrier creams
- Moisturize dry skin regularly
