Food Allergy

Overview

Common allergens include peanuts, milk, eggs, shellfish, soy, and wheat. Even small amounts can trigger a reaction.

Causes

  • Immune response to food proteins
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Early food exposure (in infants)

Symptoms

  • Itching or swelling (mouth, throat)
  • Hives, skin rash
  • Vomiting, diarrhea
  • Wheezing or difficulty breathing
  • Anaphylaxis (severe cases)

Treatment: Modern Medicine

  • Diagnosis: Skin prick test, blood IgE levels, food challenge
  • Treatment:
    • Antihistamines for mild cases
    • Epinephrine (EpiPen) for anaphylaxis
    • Allergen avoidance

  • Ayurveda: Haridra, Amalaki (immunity modulation)
  • Siddha: Manathakkali, Thoothuvalai
  • Unani: Dawa-ul-Misk, Sharbat Unnab

Caution

  • Anaphylaxis is life-threatening—always carry EpiPen if diagnosed
  • Not the same as food intolerance (e.g., lactose)

Prevention

  • Introduce allergenic foods cautiously in infants
  • Inform schools/caregivers of allergy
