Overview
Common allergens include peanuts, milk, eggs, shellfish, soy, and wheat. Even small amounts can trigger a reaction.
Causes
- Immune response to food proteins
- Genetic predisposition
- Early food exposure (in infants)
Symptoms
- Itching or swelling (mouth, throat)
- Hives, skin rash
- Vomiting, diarrhea
- Wheezing or difficulty breathing
- Anaphylaxis (severe cases)
Treatment: Modern Medicine
- Diagnosis: Skin prick test, blood IgE levels, food challenge
- Treatment:
- Antihistamines for mild cases
- Epinephrine (EpiPen) for anaphylaxis
- Allergen avoidance
Treatment: Traditional Medicine
- Ayurveda: Haridra, Amalaki (immunity modulation)
- Siddha: Manathakkali, Thoothuvalai
- Unani: Dawa-ul-Misk, Sharbat Unnab
- Homeopathy: Lycopodium, Natrum mur, Sulphur
- Nutraceuticals: Probiotics, Quercetin, Vitamin C
Caution
- Anaphylaxis is life-threatening—always carry EpiPen if diagnosed
- Not the same as food intolerance (e.g., lactose)
Prevention
- Read labels
- Introduce allergenic foods cautiously in infants
- Inform schools/caregivers of allergy
