Lactose Intolerance

Overview

Not dangerous but causes digestive discomfort. Common in adults, especially of Asian, African, and South American descent.

Causes

  • Genetic (primary lactase deficiency)
  • Intestinal injury or infection (secondary)
  • Age-related enzyme loss

Symptoms

  • Bloating, gas
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Nausea after dairy intake

  • Treatment:
    • Lactose-free diet
    • Lactase enzyme supplements

Caution

Prevention

  • Use lactase-fortified milk
