Overview
Most cases are viral and short-lived. Chronic cases may result from overuse, GERD, smoking, or allergens.
Causes
- Viral upper respiratory infection
- Excessive talking or shouting
- Acid reflux (laryngopharyngeal reflux)
- Smoking, pollutants
Symptoms
- Hoarseness or raspy voice
- Dry or sore throat
- Weak voice or complete loss
- Cough, mild fever
- Tickling or raw feeling in throat
Treatment: Modern Medicine
- Diagnosis: Laryngoscopy (for persistent symptoms)
- Treatment:
- Voice rest, steam inhalation
- Hydration and throat lozenges
- Antibiotics (if bacterial)
- Proton pump inhibitors (if reflux-related)
Treatment: Traditional Medicine
- Ayurveda: Yashtimadhu, Sitopaladi churna, medicated ghee
- Siddha: Thirikadugam, warm water gargle with salt and turmeric
- Unani: Arq-e-Gulab, Laooq-e-Katan
- TCM: Mai Men Dong, acupuncture
- Homeopathy: Argentum met, Causticum, Spongia
- Nutraceuticals: Zinc, Honey, Propolis, Ginger extract
Caution
- Chronic laryngitis may indicate vocal cord nodules or cancer
- Avoid whispering—it strains vocal cords more
Prevention
- Avoid shouting and smoking
- Hydrate well and humidify dry air
- Manage reflux or allergies early
