Laryngitis

Overview

Most cases are viral and short-lived. Chronic cases may result from overuse, GERD, smoking, or allergens.

Causes

  • Viral upper respiratory infection
  • Excessive talking or shouting
  • Acid reflux (laryngopharyngeal reflux)
  • Smoking, pollutants

Symptoms

  • Hoarseness or raspy voice
  • Dry or sore throat
  • Weak voice or complete loss
  • Cough, mild fever
  • Tickling or raw feeling in throat

Treatment: Modern Medicine

  • Diagnosis: Laryngoscopy (for persistent symptoms)
  • Treatment:
    • Voice rest, steam inhalation
    • Hydration and throat lozenges
    • Antibiotics (if bacterial)
    • Proton pump inhibitors (if reflux-related)

Treatment: Traditional Medicine

  • Ayurveda: Yashtimadhu, Sitopaladi churna, medicated ghee
  • Siddha: Thirikadugam, warm water gargle with salt and turmeric
  • Unani: Arq-e-Gulab, Laooq-e-Katan
  • TCM: Mai Men Dong, acupuncture
  • Homeopathy: Argentum met, Causticum, Spongia
  • Nutraceuticals: Zinc, Honey, Propolis, Ginger extract

Caution

  • Chronic laryngitis may indicate vocal cord nodules or cancer
  • Avoid whispering—it strains vocal cords more

Prevention

  • Avoid shouting and smoking
  • Hydrate well and humidify dry air
  • Manage reflux or allergies early
